The Pendant : For this necklace I used our popular sterling silver STARGREY pendant based on the original art work of Kathy Hoynes which I oxidized to perfectly match and hangs below the adorably rustic 35mm(1.5") pewter basket-weave daisy. Total length of both pendants is just over 3 inches.
The Necklace: I strung two strands consisting of faceted round two tone AAA Hubei turquoise beads, larger round greenish/blue beads, smaller polished red coral and various oxidized Bali style spacer beads for a striking color combo.
The shorter strand is 14.5" and the longer is 17". This necklace sits beautifully on the neck and compliments almost any neck line
The Closure: An exquisite hand made sterling clasp which has a beautifully faceted ruby quartz bezel set at it's center.
A Note About Hubei Turquoise:
There's only one type of turquoise that has been requested more than the
blue, that is the hard to find two-tone Chinese turquoise from Hubei,
China. Chinese turquoise is green-blue turquoise, but
when it has a perfect balance of green and blue and hint of colors in
between such as yellow and brown, it then becomes the famous "two-tone"
turquoise. Out of a batch of 100 strands of Chinese turquoise, there is usually only 3-5 strands that are truly "two-tone."
Most turquoise needs some form of treatment due to its softness, and
there are lots of different processes. There's a "clear treat" in which
acrylic resin is applied but no color is added. Which is the only type
of turquoise I prefer.
WHAT IS THE GREYHOUND STARFISH CONNECTION?
Those familiar with greyhound adoption may also be aware of the starfish poem and how it relates to the mindset of those who adopt these elegant, gorgeous, deserving, hounds.
My inspiration for these jewelry pieces stems from my personal identification with the poem.
The Starfish Poem
As I walked along the seashore
This young boy greeted me.
He was tossing stranded starfish
Back to the deep blue sea.
I said, "Tell me why you bother,
Why you waste your time this way.
There's a million stranded starfish
Does it matter, anyway?"
And he said, "It matters to this one.
It deserves a chance to grow.
It matters to this one.
I can't save them all I know.
But it matters to this one,
I'll return it to the sea.
It matters to this one,
And it matters to me."
